SEDEX – Supplier Ethical Data Exchange
SEDEX is a membership organisation for businesses committed to continuous improvement of the ethical performance of their supply chains. But why do companies join SEDEX and what is its role?
Although most companies base their policies on local and international laws, internationally recognised standards such as the Ethical Trade Initiative ( ETI) Base Code and the International Labour Organisation ( ILO) Conventions also have an influence on company policies and drive convergence in policies and principles.
SEDEX can be used by suppliers as an easy way of storing, organising and making information available in relation to their ethical and responsible business practices. SEDEX does not set standards or determine policies of its members neither does it state whether an organisation has passed or failed a particular standard.
Members of SEDEX can use information available to evaluate its supplier or potential suppliers against a range of ethical and responsible practices covered by by ILO Conventions, ETI Base Code, SA8000, ISO14001 and industry specific codes of conduct or the labour standards provisions in individual corporate codes.
The role of SEDEX can simply be described as a database that facilitates the access of information in relation to ethical performance and practice. More information on SEDEX can be found on www.sedex.org.uk
